The Gratuitous B-Movie Column Issue #270: Yet Another Mini-Revie

A pixelated cheese-poof of matinee storytelling that features an epic war between alien monsters and all humankind, this new movie from new-school horror maestro Guillermo del Toro (Panas Labyrinth, Hellboy) affirms more than a few old-school movie truths as it stomps down Main Street, cargo ship in hand. For starters, we have no marquee star and it doesnat matter one bit. Though Idris Elba (Prometheus, Thor) and Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) have solid CVs, they donat have the name recognition of a Tom Cruise or a Bruce Willis. As a result, Pacific Rim is cleared of the brand clutter that can mess up the overall message of a given entertainment product. Del Toro didnat have to provide jutting jaw close-ups of his male cast, nor did he have to sacrifice his artistic vision to placate a monstrous ego.
Source:

Steve Jobs believed in dreaming big. In the 1970s personal computers were relegated to the hobbyist market. Jobs had the vision of putting a computer in the hands of everyday people. He once said that Xerox could have dominated the entire computer industry because Xerox scientists in Palo Altos PARC research facility were developing the first graphical user interface. Jobs said Xerox failed because its vision was limited to making another copy machine. Never underestimate the power of a bold vision to move your career and the world forward.
Source:

The Difference Between a Good Movie and an Important One: The Butler

He certainly needed something to. There are different issues for Liam Hemsworth 's leading man, Adam Cassidy. He's a good-looking, wait, make that fantastic-looking techie wunderkind who gets in the middle of a grudge match between Goddard and another computer kingpin, Nicholas Wyatt. Gary Oldman hangs on to his hair, though he's asked to ride his British accent a bit too hard. ‘Austenland,’ movie review

So, again, can anyone make a movie that doesn't feature either Batman or Superman that also works? Finally, what happens if the movie going public tires of the whole "comic book superhero movie" thing by the time a Justice League movie is actually made? Is it a good idea to spend so much money and time on something that no one gives a shit about? So what do you guys think? Am I the only one who thinks Warner Bros and DC need to slow down and maybe rethink this whole team up/mega movie universe thing? *** The Gratuitous B-Movie Column B-Movie Babe of the Week: Amy Adams *** Things to Watch Out For This Week: Part 2 - Alyce Kills: After the watching the trailer for this low budget horror flick a few times I still have no idea what it's about. But it does look creepy, and sometimes that's all you need to make a difference.
Source:

10 Powerful Quotes From The Steve Jobs Movie And What They Teach Us About Leadership

Between the squealing giddiness demonstrated at the mere thought of a submersive Austen-world and the way almost every moment is overplayed, the film wears out its welcome faster than a poor cousin in the country guesthouse. Keri Russell is Jane (get it?), a plain-Jane (yes, we get it ...) who blows her life savings on a trip to a Disney-like mini-theme park populated by the types of characters in Pride & Prejudice, Emma and Sense & Sensibility. Janes luck with gauche modern guys is nil. She pines for a real-life Darcy, obsessed as she is with Colin Firths this one 1995 turn in the BBC production of P&P. So shes primed for what Austenlands proprietor (starchily one-note Jane Seymour) promises will wind up in romance no touching allowed, of course. Keri Russell and JJ Feild in Austenland Janes fellow emotional tourist is a crass American ( Jennifer Coolidge ) whos there because she thinks her cleavage will look great in the tight gowns. Coolidge, a trouper, practically bursts a hamstring trying to save every scene shes in. On the weedy grounds of Austenlands English estate, where fake deer are set up in the background and faux pheasants are shot, Jane (pseudonym: Ms. Erstwhile) is given a choice between surly Mr. Nobley (JJ Feild) or fey Col. Andrews (James Callis).
Source:

Ultimately the quieter moments are what kept me interested. Whitaker's combination of humiliation and held-back dignity when Cecil is turned down for a raise is as subtle as it is masterful. And when The Butler forgoes serving up its contrived and over-cooked race heart-to-hearts, it manages to create some authentic "A-Ha Moments." In the beginning of the film, Cecil explains what it was like to be a black man in the 1920s: "Any white man could kill any of us at any time and not be punished for it. The law was not on our side. The law was against us." The moment reverberates through the theater, and the long nine decades of work and resistance between the bad old 1920s Cecil describes and the 2010s of George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin seem Kim Kardashian video like only the start of an ever-ongoing struggle. The Butler regularly reminds us of how far we have come in terms of race relations and equality and then knocks us on the ass with how far we haven't come. Daniels said one of his challenges was "not making the film feel self-important," but that's ridiculous.
Source:

10 Powerful Quotes From The Steve Jobs Movie And What They Teach

When it comes to the presidents, Liev Schreiber as LBJ and Alan Rickman as President Reagan are the best, and John Cusack as Richard Nixon the worst. James Marsden supplies the hair, accent, empathy and warmth to JFK. David Oyelowo brings pain and passion to the role of Louis while Terrence Howard turns up as the neighborhood lothario and Cuba Gooding Jr. and Lenny Kravitz are perfect as part of Cecil's workplace circle. None other than Clarence Williams III, fondly remembered as Linc on "The Mod Squad" and here something of a mentor to young Cecil, scolds the teen for using the N-word. "Don't you ever use that word!
Source:

Which is a shame. While this chintzy-looking romantic comedy thinks just a few sight gags are enough, a sneakier satire would have gone further. But that alternate Austenland would need to be less square than this one, directed by Napoleon Dynamite co-writer Jerusha Hess and produced by Twilight doyenne Stephenie Meyer. Between the squealing giddiness demonstrated at the mere thought of a submersive Austen-world and the way almost every moment is overplayed, the film wears out its welcome faster than a poor cousin in the country guesthouse. Movie review: Pacific Rim

Critics called it saccharine, entertaining but flawed and made-for-TV. More recent reviews havent been much better. The film scores a 40 out of 100 on Rotten Tomatoes. Justin Chang at Variety (who reviewed the movie in January after Sundance) says the film, more or less embodies the sort of bland, go-with-the-flow creative thinking Jobs himself would have scorned. According to PreAct, a new service from Rentrak that analyzes social media conversation about films, a lot of people are talking about Jobs. The film scores on 89 out of 100 for the size of the conversation. But it only gets a 4 out of 100 in terms of positive sentiment.
Source:

The problem was that in "Star Trek into Darkness," Kirk had no idea when Khan was, so when "John Harrison" revealed his real name, there was no reason for Kirk to care. His name might as well have been "Ringo," and it would have had the same effect (which was none at all). The reason is that the filmmakers did a rather brilliant job with the 2009 movie by setting it in an alternate timeline, which freed them from the restraints of staying confined to the 45-year-old "Trek" chronology. They could have gone their own way, and they should have. The sky was no longer the limit, and they missed a golden opportunity to make this all-new "Star Trek" their own. (And I have to admit, I did CRINGE when Spock yelled "Khan!" Nothing compares to the way Shatner did it in 1982, which is now a staple of pop culture.) Paramount had a major goal with these last two movies: to make "Star Trek" movies that even non-Trek fans will enjoy. On that level, they succeeded big time.
Source:

Star Trek Into Darkness: Is It Really The Worst Star Trek Movie Ever? (MovieMantz)

There is only a handful of Jaegers left, and for commander Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba), they represent humanityas last chance. At this point in time weave not only swallowed the insanity of the giant monsters, weave embraced the whole premise that blends the very best of Blade Runner with Godzilla because in the end these are movies about what it means to be human. After all, the Jaegers may be giant machines but they depend on the ephemeral human essence: The control interface is mental, and the cockpit demands two pilots working in tandem, feeling each otheras thoughts and impulses in Kim Kardashian cleavage whatas called athe drift.a This element of co-operation is critical, and perhaps a less obvious proof of del Toroas internationalist approach, because it stops the standard hero story in its tracks. There is no Tom Cruise to save the day solo; everyone in this movie has to work together as a team in order to succeed a even the geeky science guys. This all fits into del Toroas larger vision, and perhaps subversive purpose, as he uses B-movie monster material to sink some gigantic teeth into the hide of the status quo. It may be hard to hear the whispers of progressive rhetoric beneath the grinding cacophony of metallic sound effects, Tyrannosaur-like screeches and constant explosions.
Source:

THIS IS MARTIN BONNER 2 stars A fiftyish man finds himself at a crossroads in life (1:23). NR. IFC. This contemplative drama draws strength from day-to-day ordinariness and a terrific lead performance from Paul Eenhoorn, yet sadly falls short. Eenhoorn plays Martin, a mentor to released prison inmates who himself is regrouping after a life shakeup. Martin works for a Reno religious group when hes called upon to help Travis (Richmond Arquette), who killed someone in a car accident. Martin is dealing with the distance he feels from his grown children, and Travis is trying to cope with a similar estrangement, so the men help each other move forward in quiet ways. Earthquake fault risk to Hollywood skyscrapers hidden, foes say
